THE PRICE OF GAMBLING ON A LOW-COST SOLUTION

Auto Suppliers/Automotive, General, Project Logistics, Social

What price are you willing to pay to cut corners with your business?

Consider Volkswagen, which is a case study in short-sighted short cuts. The German automaker appeared to be riding high until September when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revealed the company’s diesel cars were equipped with software that allowed them to cheat on emissions tests.

As a result, Volkswagen reported its first quarterly loss in more than 15 years — 1.67 billion euros.  And that is just the beginning of the damage.

The company has been ordered to recall 8.5 million vehicles in Europe and must repair another 500,000 in the U.S.  There’s no telling what the repairs will do to performance and fuel economy once the cars are compliant with air quality regulations, and then there is still the issue of reputation — not only with the public, but among VW’s 614,000 employees.  The trust has been broken.

All that for trying to find the least expensive way out of a challenging situation.

This is not the first time a corporation has been stung trying to take the easy way out.  The price of making do with a low-cost solution can be extremely dear no matter the size of your company.
